Two major flood disasters have struck Asia at around the same time. In Southeast Asia, Cyclone Senyar and intense monsoon rain caused widespread flooding in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Indonesia has recorded at least 600 deaths, over 450 missing and more than 575 thousand evacuees. Thailand has reported flooding in southern provinces, including once-in-300-year rainfall in Songkhla, with at least 176 deaths. Malaysia’s Perlis state has also been heavily affected. A separate storm, Cyclone Ditwah, hit Sri Lanka, causing 355 deaths, hundreds of people missing, and affecting more than 1.1 million people. India has launched relief efforts as rescue teams reach stranded communities across the region.
