After revoking the rule on a 6-month trial period, from December, bars and restaurants can sell alcohol in the afternoon, while companies can play their advertising freely.
In Thailand, the restriction on drinking in the afternoon attracted strong resistance from people.
After facing strong pushback from its tourism and hospitality sectors, Thailand has lifted the ban on afternoon drinking hours. This move will delight travellers heading to the popular destination over the upcoming winter break, as authorities have revoked the restrictions that previously received a lukewarm response.
Earlier this year, the Thai government amended the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, imposing heavy penalties on locals and tourists caught consuming alcohol between 2 PM and 5 PM. Violators faced fines of up to 10,000 baht (approximately over Rs 27,000).
Thai Authorities Faced Resistance
The authorities also enforced a ban on companies from advertising alcoholic drinks. The restriction was specially made against brands that had celebrities and influencers in their advertisements. The aim was to cover not just the bars and the restaurants in Thai cities but also the country’s overall consumer base.
While enforced with good intentions, the move didn’t at all please Thailand’s restaurants, bar owners and travel operators, who argued that it disrupted normal services and left tourists confused. The ban dismayed tourists who loved their afternoon drinks while going sightseeing with their families and friends.
Relief For Thai Locals And Travellers
Now, after months of being operational and affecting the tourism and hospitality sectors, the Thai government has responded to the criticism and resistance by suspending the 2-5 PM restriction. From the beginning of December, bars and restaurants will be allowed to sell alcohol even during these hours, while companies can play their advertising freely.
However, the restriction has been lifted on trial as part of a six-month programme, which could be extended at the behest of Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat beyond the middle of 2026 if no harmful implications are observed.
It means travellers can now freely enjoy their afternoon drinks on Thai shores. The authorities had already exempted all licensed entertainment venues, specific hotels, certified tourist-area establishments, and international airports from the ban, allowing them to continue serving alcohol all day.
However, in a critical move, the Thai government has imposed restrictions on buying and consuming cannabis. In 2018, medical marijuana was legalised in Thailand before being completely decriminalised back in 2022. But the announcement had an adverse effect, leading to the opening of 18,000 dispensaries and weed cafes across the country.
Since July 2025, however, locals and travellers are required to show a doctor’s prescription to buy cannabis legally. The authorities want people to use cannabis for medical and health purposes only.
