What’s happening in Phuket
Phuket is a favourite for Filipinos looking for beaches, nightlife, and tropical fun. But authorities have noticed some tourists abusing Thailand’s visa-free entry rules. The practice called ‘visa running’ lets people leave and re-enter the country to extend their stay beyond the legal limit.
Phuket International Airport has now introduced stricter checks. Officers review travellers’ itineraries, financial means, and the purpose of their visit. People with multiple entries or stays exceeding 150 days may be interviewed or deported if they cannot clearly explain their trip.
The new rules are already affecting visitors. Around 2,000 travellers have been deported this year at Phuket Airport for failing to meet the entry requirements. Another 900 travellers have been flagged elsewhere in Thailand for unusual travel patterns. Authorities say these measures are to protect genuine tourists and stop people from working or staying illegally.

The tighter rules come from Police Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyalak and other top immigration officials. The government wants to prevent illegal activities linked to visa abuse, including scams and money crimes. Tourist visas can now be extended only twice. The first extension is for 30 days, and the second is for seven days. Repeated border runs may result in denial of entry. Same-day departures and re-entries are mostly not allowed. Visitors staying short-term with proper documentation are largely unaffected. Those planning long-term stays must get the correct visa, as authorities will monitor anyone misusing the visa-free system.
