Public health permanent secretary Kiatiphum Wongrajit predicted that the number of Covid-19 infections will not fall much due to eased restrictions on businesses and activities.

Dr Kiatiphum said on Tuesday that the rate of coronavirus infections would gradually decrease, but not by much, and definitely not to zero. In fact, the country’s daily infections might reach five digits, he said.

He attributed the heightened risk to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions on certain businesses and activities that would stimulate the economy, increase employment enable people to resume normal life.

Dr Kiatiphum believed the Covid-19 disease would soon become endemic in areas where patients developed no severe symptoms and many were vaccinated, such as Bangkok and Phuket.

The permanent secretary said the disease would gradually fade away or people who got infected would have no longer have severe symptoms like in Bangkok, where there were 2,000-3,000 daily infections, he said.

Dr Kiatiphum said the hospital bed shortage problem has gradually improved. However, people should not be careless and should wear face masks, regularly wash hands and observe social disancing, he added.
